Thermal Insulation is when a substance absorbs or has a reduced amount of absorption of thermal energy due to some other factor. In its simplest form, it’s the difference between how much heat moves from a source to a surface and how much heat moves out of the same surface in the opposite direction. There are many different forms of thermal insulation that are available such as spraying foam, mineral wool, Mylar, fiberglass, cellulose fibers and others.
Thermal insulation is a phenomenon that occurs in objects when they have a low temperature and one undergoes conduction or convection. Convection is a process wherein heat is distributed differently within an object for example the different areas of a hot car engine. As a result of thermal insulation, the coldness or chill is distributed over the entire surface of the object which means less or even no warm air can get into the interior of the object. The colder the water vapour is, the cooler the interior of the object that is subjected to this condition. The most common type of insulation that effectively holds walls and floors in homes is mineral wool, fiberglass and cellulose. Waterproofing, on the other hand, only works if the material that is being waterproofed has a very good permeability level which allows water vapour to move freely through the substance.
Thermal Insulation also refers to the energy efficiency of a building. If you build a house that is built from good quality materials then the house will be insulated well and will effectively hold heat flow coming from the sun. The more efficient the insulation in the building, the more heat you can expect to hold from the sun without letting it escape out into the surrounding atmosphere. In fact, some architects and engineers base the energy efficiency rating on the amount of insulation that is used on the roof, walls and floors of the house. A house with high insulation levels is expected to have high energy efficiency, especially in the summer season.
The basic types of insulation that are used in homes
The thickness and level of the insulation also play a significant role in determining how effective it is in preventing heat loss. In general, the higher the insulation material, the better the resistance to heat flow. You should take into consideration the material that is being used when choosing the insulation material for your home. The basic types of insulation that are used in homes are either a combination of materials like fiberglass and cellulose or it comes in one single material such as mineral wool or drywall. If you use these two basic types, then the temperature inside your house should be kept at the same level all throughout the year.
There are also two other important types of thermal insulation materials used in the home, which are commonly referred to as permeation and air permeability. Permeation refers to the way in which heat and cold travels through the material, while air permeability measures the resistance to air flow. Usually, the more permeable the material is, the better the resistance to air and heat flow is. Thus, the most popular form of insulation used in homes is either mineral wool or drywall. It should be noted that mineral wool has a very low R-value, which means that it has a poor ability to insulate.
